Sgt. Wayne Hanson, ripped

Humboldt County’s Drug Enforcement Sergeant Wayne Hanson probably regrets exaggerating the number of marijuana-related murders when talking to a reporter recently. Ellen Komp of the Civil Liberties Monitoring Project set him straight in the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, and now 2nd District Supervisor Roger Rodoni gives it to him blunt.

Talking with Hank Sims on KHUM’s Humboldt Review last eve, Rodoni reacted to Hanson’s enthusiastic defense of the war on marijuana, which Hanson equated to “the war on rape.”

“You don’t find Mr. Hanson jumping up and down, running around trying to bust drug houses,” Rodoni said. “That’s not very much fun. But it is kind of fun to get in a helicopter and go ripping around acting like Rambo.”

Rodoni supports legalization and said alcohol and cigarettes kill more people than marijuana. In fact, the war on marijuana has killed more people than marijuana itself, he said.

While acknowledging the affects legalization would have on the economy, Rodoni said “equilibrium” would happen in another form. He pointed to the market for Humboldt grass-fed beef and goat cheese.

Sims sounded convinced.

“You wanna light one up and go outside,” asked Rodoni.

Comments:
Roger really has a marvelous wit.

It was very entertaining.

I am sorry I missed it, however it was the summer solstice yesterday. Happy Summer!

Click on the link in the post for "KHUM's Humboldt Review" to listen. The show gets uploaded every Friday after it airs Thursday night.

And happy summer to you, too.

alcohol and cigarettes kill more people than marijuana.

Yes, that's why they're legal! And marijuana is gental, non-toxic and even medicinal, so that's why it's illegal.

Makes perfect sense to me! (after a few Budweisers)

RODONI IS ALWAYS A STRAIGHT SHOOTER,but you only like him when he's rightfully talking sence on pot reform. Wake up and listen to him the rest of the time. He is no secound rate political whore.

Gee - guess someone missed this - February 24, 2005 - north coast journal...

A jury found Robert Matthew Church, 38, of Miranda guilty of first-degree murder Friday in the killing of Zachary Stone, 31, of Redway, said Worth Dikeman of the Humboldt County District Attorney's Office. Church was also found guilty of personally and intentionally using a firearm in the commission of the offense and of lying in wait.

Gee - if you were there and read about it...it was a pot murder.

But who cares right Heraldo?

Would you like to know more...other murders, disappearances, home invasion robberies (which is actually the largest group), sexual assaults and yes - even child abuse is in there.

Just ask...and your wish can be fulfilled if you have the stomach for it.

Hanson's statistics were about murder, not home invasions and other crimes.

Even with the Church conviction, he still exaggerated. It's fine to talk about it all, but no reason to lie (unless your job depends on it).

Hanson is wrong but knows where his bread is buttered. Much like Mark/heraldo but he won't tell you who's paying him.

Well, well...so the home invasions, assaults, sex offenses don't count because Hanson just said murder...?

You gotta be kiddin me...have some substance Mr. H, Mark, Ken or whatever you are calling yourself today.

BTW whose shift is it to be Heraldo today?

Oh! Lame, default argument time. Goody.

Good thing you know what Hanson was talking about since he apparently didn't.

Heraldo - you are acting lame now. Shame on you.

The fact is that there have been a lot more than just the Stone murder on the basis of pot and a lot that we don't know about because these people just go missing in areas like briceland, whitethorn, bridgeville etc.

You are completely dodging the fact that there has been an incredible increase in assaults, home invations, due to this as well as missing persons etc.

I was in court a couple of years ago and saw a guy who HAD HIS ARM BLOWN OFF by a guy who came to rip his dope off in his house in Arcata. And if you don't think that there is no violence (and serious violence) associated with this, then you have your head in the sand!

Didn’t I read not long ago about a group of 4 from Sohum who tied a woman up to a tree and raped her over 4 days because of a bad pot deal or steal. Yeah - the Garza twins.

Shame on you.

I don't disagree. I only pointed out, as have others, that Hanson exaggerated on the number of murders.

Many of the crimes associated with marijuana are due to it being illegal.

"I was in court a couple of years ago and saw a guy who HAD HIS ARM BLOWN OFF by a guy who came to rip his dope off in his house in Arcata."

No need to exaggerate. He was shot in the arm, but it wasn't "blown off." It's still attached, and works fine.

The # of pot homicides is probably under reported because they don't spend much time looking for those folks (dead drug dealers)

"RODONI IS ALWAYS A STRAIGHT SHOOTER,but you only like him when he's rightfully talking sence on pot reform. Wake up and listen to him the rest of the time. He is no secound rate political whore."

Anon, I voted for Roger the first time when he ran against Roy Heider and when I lived in the second district. I now live in Jimmy Smith's district.

I have always found Rogers lively quotes quite humorous and memorable. Don't you?

He's often memorable, but not always humorous.

You call Rodoni a "straight shooter", I call him intolerant of any view that doesn't shoot straight out of his mouth.

His pro-pot stance is a desperate ploy -- since he's now changed his mind and has decided to run for one more term.

And why has he decided to run again? 'Cause some of his good ol' boy friends are finally being required to follow the environmental laws in their extraction activities and they need Roger for the political solution.

Just make sure you aren't in the way when Roger shoots.

So I guess it's better to just give up and legalize marijuana. That you smoke, even though all the progs are regulating it so you can't smoke anywhere, and the intoxicating effects of alcohol, with all the traffic deaths and other maimings caused by driving while intoxicated. But it's medicine, right?

Carol, do you find Rodoni's racist comments about Native Americans to be humorous as well?

As for Roger suddenly changing his mind, a little study of history is in order. He has, for years, decried the stupidity of the war on pot and was always in the minority on the Board of Supes about accepting some grant to go out and pull up weed.

As for you 2:54, I watched lots of testimony about the Tribe and HCAOG. Tell me what racist statement are you referring to.

NOPE, no paraphrasing or saying that a friend of your cousin told you. Give me the exact racist quote. C'mon, I know you can do it. Day, date, time, and venue too, please. A newspaper reference would suffice.

I'll check back soon.

5:54 needs to get laid. And yeah, Rodoni is a racist.

ohhhh nice substantiation there 11:11. Youve been effectively called on your BULLSHIT.

So...step two, try and deflect from the valid points raised. Not gonna work here boyo.

5:54,
I didn't say Roger changed his mind about pot, I said he changed his mind about running for office next term when it was widely understood he was retiring.

As for the weed, I said it was a "desperate ploy" -- meaning that Roger needed a juicy sound bite to get people talking.

Rodoni's a sexist too. Didn't you hear about the creepy pseudo-serial killer comments he made about both Harmony Groves and Bonnie Neely? He even said something about butterflies in the mouth of Groves. Didn't you ever see Silence of the Lambs? Rodoni is a weird, sick and twisted freak who never should've been let into office in the first place. How do you explain that comment about Neely being "buried in the courthouse?" Roger Rodoni needs psychiatric medication, not another four years. Of course, I said the same thing about Bush and just look at what happened! 4 more years of sick insanity in the nation. Why not 4 more years of madness from Rodoni?

The fallout from the reggae fiasco may divide the left enough in that district to prevent them from working together and finding a viable candidate who would probably win the election.Eric, and the rest of those involved in the reggae fight,I plead with you to put the past behind you enough so that you can move forward from here on out,and get someone in that seat who will address all concerns in the community.Rodoni has the right stance on pot,and in general I like his arguably libertarian outlook. But he has been detrimental when it comes to land use and regulation, and has been detrimental in regards to road maintenance and public safety in general. So put the personal gripes aside and get a candidate out there who has the same stance on pot and personal privacy, and yet addresses the issues that Rodoni has failed to act on.

Agreed. Running the typical Eric Kirk middle-of-the-road Democrat is a sure recipe for political failure against Rodoni. The Democrats need to put up a pro-pot progressive civil libertarian against Rodoni. Then, they may actually win.

Not likely. Look at the first post on this thread.

Carol is Carol Connors of the Humboldt Democratic Central Committee. And she thinks "ROGER REALLY HAS A MARVELOUS WIT."

Too bad the crew at the HCDCC are too clueless to put up a real challenger against Rodoni.

If you want to change the composition of the HCDCC you can get your name on the ballot for the June 2008 primary election by turning in the signatures of 20 registered voters. You don't need to pay any filing fees. Call the Humboldt County Elections Office for info.

Also, Republicans can do the same. 20 signatures gets you on the ballot to run for the Republican Central Committee too.

Shouldn't these Central Committee elections be contested, with the voters making the decision as to who will represent them, not party insiders just picking their friends? We would all be better off, Democrats and Republicans, if we could get some real representation from our so-called local "leaders."

As for legalization, I'm all for it so long as the penalties regarding it and alcohol are significantly increased.

How about this? You get caught driving stoned or drunk (or both) and you not only do a year in jail but you lose your license for life. While in jail you are required to be on a work crew at least five days a week.
If you kill someone while driving drunk or stoned, you get the chair. You hurt or maim or paralyze someone and it's life with no parole.
All same laws apply to juveniles, just to keep it fair.

Would you risk the death penalty just to save money on cab fare?
No sane person would, and that works out great since all the scum who think it's okay to drive around wasted will be killed off or locked up for a long time, removed from both society and the gene pool by the own stupidity.

This normally would crowd the prisons but since there'd be no more people in jail for selling or posessing pot, there'd be plenty of room.
And on top of it all, with a lot of people losing their licenses, traffic will be lighter and safer. Public trasportation, carpooling, and alternative modes of transportation (walking, biking, etc.) will get a boost. That means less pollution, less dependance on Foreign Oil, and healthier people.

Basically, if you are willing to hurt or kill someone else then you will have to accept consequences equally as severe.

Umm, hello. 5:54 here again. I do need to get laid. Think I'll go do that with my wife now.

However, I'm still waiting for the quote, reference, etc. that shows that Roger is a racist.

I really did give you a long time to get it for me.

Hmmm... I guess I'll check in again tomorrow. Perhaps you've been busy 2:54. I'll give you another 24 hours to back up your statement.

the murders and violence surrounding the marijuana industry are caused by the prohibition of marijuana, not the marijuana itself or the use of it.

Mr. Hansen is also in charge of torturing forest defenders and training other would-be torturers. The fact that what he does is considered illegal has been proven in court and is easily researchable.

hmmm...torture and prosecuting prohibition on marijuana, causing significantly more problems than it can even begin to claim to solve....sounds like a nice guy...just the sort of upstanding torturer that i would get my facts and figures from.

You guys are whacked out....

BTW - the guy with his arm blown off...it was attached but he'll never use is again so don't blow smoke up our backsides about that one. Try something else to minimize that point.
