Judi Bari, 1949-1997
Ten years ago today environmental and labor activist Judi Bari succumbed to cancer. A celebration to remember her life and work will be held tonight at the
Judi was a pioneer in working to bridge timber workers and environmentalists at a time when corporate timber bosses hired slimy propagandists Hill & Knowlton to whip up hatred within the community. Judi was also a target of COINTELPRO operatives who smeared Judi and Darryl Cherney as “terrorists” in the mainstream press after a car bomb nearly killed them.
Divisions persist in Humboldt County while looters at Maxxam count their millions. The only local winners in the dismantling of Pacific Lumber have been high-level management and their attorneys who share the vision of he-who-has-the-gold-rules.
It seems ironic that on this sad anniversary while friends gather over the death of Judi Bari timber workers and other affected citizens will gather over the bankruptcy of Pacific Lumber.

Well said. The despicable history of the FBI, including its calculated destruction of the Black Panthers and the American Indian Movement deserves regular denouncement.
Unfortunately, their tactics have graduated beyond the Federal Bureau to infect the daily operations in Patriot Act America.

Yeah, J. Edgar Hoover would be ecstatic to see his dreams for an openly fascist, racist America come true under the Bush Regime.
And now that the U.S. Constitution is effectively a useless piece of paper in a museum, we'll never get our Bill of Rights back. Not without a revolution. But it has to be nonviolent, or it would only strengthen the government -- or replace it with a worse one.

Judi Bari has always fasinated me with her aggresive activism. What a sad ending to her life. And there is so many truths that we will never know for sure. I applaud her life. Radical activists are the best equalizers of radical corporations!
I will say that Judi, unlike Darryl, never took any pot shots at me. Still, she belongs to the enviro fame junkie era which did us all a huge disservice by misdirecting practically all enviro protection efforts into the E.F!/EPIC war with Palco. As a result, the Mattole River dries up and hardly any fish swim in SoHum creeks and rivers because no environmental regulations in place on homestead development. All eyes were focused by media oriented activists on Judi, Darryl, Julia, Remedy, then Paul and the Ken Miller lawsuit against Palco.
Meanwhile, the indigenous animals in the SoHum hills starve for water in the late summer when pot plants are taking all available water away..

Did Judi Bari ever talk about Emma Goldman? Seems as if there might have been some parallels in their lives and philosophies. Also in their styles of activism.

Liberals like Judi Bari are wrong about almost everything.
Liberals are wrong on quite literally every issue.
It's not just domestic policy. It's foreign policy. It's every policy. Liberals are diametrically opposed to that which is good, right and successful.
The modern liberal will invariably side with evil over good, wrong over right, and the behaviors that lead to failure over those that lead to success.
How could you possibly live in the freest nation in the history of the world and only see oppression? How could you live in the least imperialist power in human history and see us as the ultimate in imperialism? How can you live in the least bigoted nation in human history ... and see racism lurking in every dark shadow? The answer is that you have to be a left wing fruitcake.
Liberal ideology lends itself to a rejection of all fact, reason, evidence, logic, truth, morality, and decency. That is why Judi Bari lived such a dysfunctional life.

BTW - What's becoming of the skinhead-aryan nation-white power-christian identity folks (I use that term very loosely) in the area? Awhile back I read somewhere that their numbers were growing, recruiting more youngsters and had purchased property in Southern Humboldt, but I've heard little since.

So it follows then that Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, ad nauseum must by your definition be LIBERALS since they clearly reject fact, reason, evidence, decency, truth and act without moral conviction - PLEASE don't lump them in with US. IMPEACH BUSH!
